Description

Magnesium is an essential nutrient needed for over 300 biochemical processes involving the muscles, nerves, and bones. Magnesium is also essential for the metabolism of carbohydrates, protein, and fat to release energy from food. Many researchers recommend that we get just as much magnesium each day as we do calcium. Although bones contain twice as much calcium as magnesium, within cells the level of magnesium is more than double the level of calcium.

Magnesium deficiency is considered widespread in North America, and a lack of magnesium is associated with higher levels of irritability, insomnia, fatigue, cramps, migraine headaches, constipation, and osteoporosis. Magnesium is vital for the health of the brain, and low magnesium levels are also associated with poor sleep quality, irritability, and increased feelings of stress.

Diets high in processed foods often lack magnesium, but even a healthy diet can leave people deficient in magnesium due to the depletion of magnesium from the soil; excess dietary calcium; medications that affect mineral absorption and elimination; and low stomach acid, which compromises the absorption of non-citrate forms of magnesium.
